Bowelexamination - dietary instructions
Dietary instructions for bowelexamination
(endoscopy/sigmoïdoscopy)
To ensure that this examination can be done properly, your bowels have to be completely clean and empty. You will, therefore, have to follow a special diet and take laxatives .......day(s) before the examination.
About half an hour after you have taken the prescribed dose of magnesium sulphate, repetitive diarrhoea will begin so do make sure that you stay near the lavatory (W.C)! If you are taking the “Pill” it is adviseble to use another method contraception during your courrent menstrual cycle as the diarrhoea can make the “Pill” unreliable.
You are only permitted the foods and drinks detailed below.
Not later than 08.00 hours:
1 dose of magnesium sulphate, dissolved in
1 glass of water,
2 tablets Bisacodyl.
Breakfast:
1 or 2 slices white bread without butter or margarine;
possible toppings:
savoury: cheese or lean meats such as smoked and roast beef, liver, tongue, ham, pork and chicken fillet.
sweet: seedless jam, honey, apple syrup or fruit hail.
Midday meal:
1 cup non-fat bouillon with pieces of cooked chicken fillet, thickened with flour or vermicelli. approx. 125 grams cooked chicken fillet or fish.
a water ice or gelatine pudding (see recipe below) or 1 glass sieved fruit juice.
Evening meal:
see midday meal
Not later than 19.00 hours
1 dose of magnesium sulphate, dissolved in
1 glass of water,
2 tablets Bisacodyl.
Throughout the whole day, you can drink:
coffee or tea without milk, with added sugar if desired, water, non-carbonated mineral water, non-fat bouillon, non-carbonated lemonade (syrup), apple and grape juices.
On the morning of the examination, you may drink a glass of water and/or a cup of tea without milk and eat a light breakfast (1 or 2 rusks).
You are allowed to take any prescribed medicines.
The day before the examination it is important that you should drink enough; at least 15 cups of liquid per day
(coffee, tea, water, non-carbonated lemonade (syrup), non-fat bouillon)
In addition to the above - to still the hunger pangs - you can take 2 packets of fibre-free Nutridrink (Nutricia) or Ensure Plus (Abbott). Both these drinks can be obtained from the dispensing chemist (apotheek) and cost about € 3,- each.
Recipe for gelatine pudding:
150 ml. sieved fruit juice
4 grams gelatine (2 leaves)
20 grams sugar
Dissolve the gelatine in cold water.
Heat half the juice. Wring out the gelatine, put it into the heated juice and stir well until it dissolves. Add the sugar and stir until it dissolves. Then add the remaining juice and leave the mixture to cool and set.
