Patient organisations give Bronovo recognition for its colon cancer care

Bronovo has received recognition from various cooperative cancer patient organisations for the quality of care given to patients with colon cancer (colorectal carcinoma). With this recognition the cancer patient organisations demonstrate that Bronovo completely meets all the quality requirements that these organisations have set.

The patient organisations Stichting Doorgang (Foundation for people with cancer of the digestive tract), Polyposis Contact Group, HNPCC-Lynch Association, the Dutch Stoma Association and the Dutch Federation of Cancer Patient Organisations (NFK) have tested Bronovo on the care for patients with colon cancer based on 15 stipulations. The tests revealed that Bronovo meets all the set quality requirements and performs well on the aspects that are important to the patient organisations.

A patient guide was set up using these criteria. The patient guide provides information about the quality of care, such as responsibility, multidisciplinary cooperation in the hospital and with general practitioners and home care and optimal support given to patients during the treatment, consultations and follow-up care.

Dr O.R. Guicherit, one of the surgeons in Bronovo, has worked in the oncological surgery department for more than ten years and was delighted to hear about the award: “This recognition is a wonderful gesture and I am very pleased that Bronovo meets all the criteria. This implies recognition for the way in which we organise the care, how we offer this care to our patients and how they experience this care. Of course, we will have to keep up the good work, now, but also in the future.”

Together with breast cancer and lung cancer, colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. In the Netherlands, approximately 10 000[1] people are diagnosed with colon cancer and this number is increasing every year. “I expect that there will be a screening programme in the near future, so that colon cancer can be detected at an earlier stage, making it easier to cure. The bar must continue to be raised in further developments, so that we are able to offer a continuing improvement in care to patients with this type of cancer”, according to Dr Guicherit.

Starting on 23 March, patients and their families will be able to check online at www.nfk.nl where they can receive the best care for colon cancer in their area. The patient guide provides information about the quality of the colon cancer care, checks whether the hospital located close to the patient’s house offers those things that the patients and their families deem important and provides more insight into what the hospital has to offer. The patient guide supports patients in selecting a hospital.
